Varizoom Pistol-Grip
I love this remote. The quality, adjustment range and solid feel you get when mounted are fabulous. I also own Varizoom's aluminum-bodied VZ-Rock for lanc camera control, and based on the quality and feel of that I wanted another Varizoom control after buying a Sony EX-3.The rocker is smaller and not as flat as the one on my VZ-Rock, and this design seems to give the remote even more of a feeling of precise control. The speed control dial gives you a huge range, and can even be dialed while zooming for the more adventurous operator. Because it's mounted on the bottom of the remote I'm thinking of adding a braille-like bump to it so I can sense it's position for those times when I can't look at the numbers. It travels about 295 degrees, so maybe two or three braille bumps. The record switch is right there but out of the way, nice for frequent stopping and starting, but a little too accessible when you need to stay in record for hours, more about that in a moment. The return video switch is perfectly placed, very natural to the right forefinger when remote is on the right, but a bit of a stretch for the left thumb during left side operation. There is no feeling that you might hit that switch accidentally, it takes a conscious effort to press, which is as it should be.Partly because of how it's mounted the record button is a bit long, and sticks out a bit too far. I think this could be modified by cutting off about half of it's length. The other mod I want to do is find a cap to cover the button completely. I think this is something Varizoom should consider adding to the product. During a long record you sometimes need to keep the switch completely shielded from accidental bumps. It seems a screw-on, screw-off cap would be enough, but a cap that bayonets up and down to protect or expose the button would be perfect. All in all a very nice remote.
