"A fish could marry a bird, but where would they live?"
Besieged, set in the 1630's Ulster area of Ireland, is the first of Small's Skye O'Malley series I have read which is a matrilineal historical romance series. It tells the romantic story of Skye's granddaughter Fortune Lindley and Kieran Devers, she a Protestant and he a Catholic, in a very intolerant world. They are faced with the classic "A fish could marry a bird, but where would they live?"While Small does a fairly good job of portraying the conflict between the local Irish Catholics and their new Protestant landlords, Fortune's family is painted as the only tolerant Protestants in the book. The noble Irish under the cruel Protestant yoke makes the story a bit one sided. Kieran's brother William is a nasty, obsessive villain as is his stepmother, Lady Jane Devers, who marries a poor Irish lord for his land and covets Fortune's large estate. It is in romance where Small excels, and Fortune and Kieran are inspiring lovers. Their passion and devotion are well-portrayed. Small's sex scenes are excellent examples of women's erotica, although they are less prominent in this book than they are in works like Love Slave.

I rethought it....
I don't believe the vivid fragrance of detail and passion is there the same way as her books written in the eighties but I had to try to like it because of Jasmine, Fortune's mother. I have to finish it because there is still a small hint of the Bertrice that I love with the heroine's low necklined gowns (finally) and the sizzle kisses with hands in bodices (finally) and feasts with roasted capons and artichokes steamed in white wine....(againfinally!) If there is even a chance that Bertrice (the real Bertrice) wrote this I have to honor her becauseI loved her..... but it is not the same as the Skye O'Malley original works of those first four books and Adora. How I loved her passion in those days and Adam DeMarisco who was such a real man that he was happy to finally get his chance with sexy multiple-loved Skye who had an oddly similar sister-in-law and niece and daughter and granddaughter (who strangely and humorously enough) all had similar sexy fates. Well this book has passion way scaled down .... but the very detailed and ridiculous war between Protestants and Catholicsis now interesting me and I have come to enjoy tuning back in. It just took a long long time to grab me which angered me because all of the above loved books grabbed me in the first paragraph. If I get even more ensconced I will come back to give it a four.

Worn-out phrases, words, and situations
Here's a list of things I have heard enough of in Bertrice Small's books, because she pads her books with them.#1. Not-so-royal Stuart.#2. "And the rest is all trifles."#3. There were artichokes braised in white wine...and a list of fifty different dead animals.#4. The wine is from Archambault.#5. Hae#6. Nae#7. Jesu!#8. The king wants you for his whore, and you have to do it or you'll dishonor your family. Here's another thing. I have just finished Besieged, and barely opened Intrigued. Right here at the beginning, it states that Henry married "Rosamund" when in Besieged, he had just married Cecily! She can't keep her characters straight! And what about that daughter Janet Skye, mentioned briefly at the end of Darling Jasmine, and then two books later there is a brief mention of a daughter who dies young? I think it was an afterthought, because Ms. Small forgot all about her.
