Affordable and reliable.
This external DVD-RW drive does just what I need it to. In an age where optical media is becoming obsolete, I'm glad I can still buy one of these, and for such a good price! I have had zero failed burns with many types of media thus far, including M-Discs. For the price, this is cheaper than some meals. I'm very satisfied and will be buying another as a backup! I highly recommend!

Great External Disc Drive
LG Electronics USB Ultra Slim Portable DVD Rewriter, External Drive with M-DISC Support If you find yourself with a Macbook Air and a sudden need for a CD drive, look no further. I purchased one, thinking I wouldn’t miss the CD drive. As it turns out, I almost immediately found out one of my classes required the use of a program that came with the textbook for the class. Looking for a solution, I turned to Amazon. Enter the LG Electronics External Ultra Slim Portable DVD Rewriter! It fits into the USB drive on any device (the Air has plenty of those), and takes very little setup. I was able to use the device without any trouble to play any disc, and it worked great. The drive does have some potential downsides. While some reviews say it’s very quiet, you may notice it makes a whirring noise when in use. The noise is minor, and may only be distracting when it’s being used to play a movie. If you should find it annoying, a simple solution would be to set something on the player, which eliminates the noise completely. If you’re worried about the physical space taken up by the drive, it can be somewhat inconvenient. But for what it is, the space is minimal, especially compared to similar products. The USB cord isn’t very long at just over a foot, but judging from other reviews, this is also better than other products. Plus, given how slim the device is (only half an inch tall), this all allows for easy storage. I haven’t found a need for an especially long cord, so it hasn’t really posed a problem. Aside from the mild potential drawbacks the external drive has, it performs excellently and I’ve never had a problem with it. It also has a very low cost, which once again is better than many of the alternatives. I would highly recommend it. By the way, I ended up with two of these, so I sent one to my parents, who also had a computer without a CD drive. They haven’t had any problems with it, and say it works great.

didn’t play my old DVDs right away … but there is a fix
Great DVD player, it just needs a little help to be used with MacBook Pro. The DVD player comes with a cable, but you need a dongle/adapter that converts the cable’s USB-A plug to the USB-C plug on the side of a MacBook. If you don’t have one, these are currently available on Amazon for $19: search “Apple USB-C to USB Adapter.” Newer DVDs play fine, but I have some old DVDs from the early 2000s that wouldn’t play just by plugging the DVD player into my Mac using the adapter. I tested them on another computer in the house and also an Xbox to confirm the problem was not the DVDs themselves. The VLC media player from the nonprofit videolan.org is a free quick download available for both Mac and PC that is able to play all DVDs. If you too have older DVDs that won't play directly, simply follow the instructions the VideoLAN website for the correct version of the media player for your computer, then you can tell your computer to automatically run VLC media player when your DVD player is plugged in by the following steps on a MacBook: Launchpad > System Settings (the gear icon) > CDs & DVDs > When you insert a video DVD > Open other applications > Open VLC The process should be similar for a PC. VLC media player will then open automatically whenever the DVD player is plugged in and you insert a DVD; an icon of the DVD will appear separately on your desktop. Simply drag the DVD icon to where it says “Drop media here” in the VLC media player window, and that’s it!

My first one lasted 9 years
After almost a decade, this drive is finally starting to show signs of wearing out and not reading discs properly anymore. I've been extremely satisfied with this purchase and it has held up quite well over the years. They're light and easily portable, and it's very convenient to be able to plug a disc drive like this into any modern PC that doesn't have an internal one, in order to play DVDs or CDs on them as desired. The only thing I would have preferred to see here is a slightly longer cable to work with, just for easier positioning relative to the rest of the PC hardware. You won't be able to place it very far away from your PC in other words, but honestly it's not that big of an issue, especially with how light the drive is. I just ended up setting it right on top of my computer case and it just hangs out there until needed. For the very reasonable price of these, and the fantastic longevity, I'll easily be buying another here pretty soon when the first one fully fails. I would recommend them to anyone who needs a DVD/CD playing solution on modern devices. For anyone wondering, the drive works great with Linux too.

What I Like - A very streamlined, slim and sleek looking DVD burner. Easy USB hookup. Worked instantly with my Windows PC and burning software. It also comes with burning software. Definitely a good value and cost if you’re looking to get a burner. Very fast speed to complete a disc. What I Don’t Like - Nothing yet.
