Suction mounts fail when the temperature changes. Not always, but often enough to be deeply annoying.This holder attaches with a sticker and I've attached it to my old suction mount flat surface which is very effective -- I don't know that it would stick as well to a textured surface. Maybe, maybe not.The jaws open a good 9cm wide, and 10cm max -- it's difficult to be more precise than that because the thickness of the device would make a difference. But that's your maximum range: 9-10cm.Easily wide enough for my ancient TomTom XXL.Other than that, there's nothing else to add: it sticks to your dash and your sat nav or phone is gripped between its jaws. For gentle to moderate acceleration it doesn't budge. And that's all you'll get out of my car so I can't vouch how it might be if you're accelerating hard in something rapid.After 1, 2, 3, 4 suction mounts the penny dropped that I wanted a different system. This works perfectly.
