McGraw-Hill's Dictionary of American Idioms Dictionary (McGraw-Hill ESL References)

pretty thorough. this primarily provides a definition and an example usage for each phrase. if you're looking for the origins/history of an idiom, this is not what the book you're looking for.

I am a Middle School teacher and I use this Idioms Dictionary as a reference for my students daily. The definitions are clear and succinct and it is so easy find what you are looking for. It's nice that it works as well for a twelve or thirteen year-old as it does for a well-educated adult.

Perfect book

Perfect gift for an Asian friend who is befuddled by many words and phrases of American English (he can use this book to learn the definition of the word 'befuddled'.)

Absolutely essential to understand American English. Good for writers and new arrivals to America.

Great Condition

Another fine book. It is easy to use (like a dictionary on idioms). Clear printing regular, bold words, couple with explanation in simple sentences. I highly introduce this book to whomever has a need for American Idioms.

really a good read, lots of good idioms

I had high expectations about this book. However, I regret I have ordered it in this format. Some of the pages were stuck together at the top and I had to cut them open by, thus I damaged the book. The print is awful, and the wrap is not strong enough. I can see the threads and how this book is soon to fall apart. The pages are too thin and feeble. What a disappointment. No complaint about the content though. I will never order anything from this print house ever again.

It's extremely good. Gives many interesting words and phrases that are useful to anyone who is looking for a different way to express himself.

Ich bin enttäuscht. Es wurde sich keine Mühe gegeben, den Inhalt des Buches zu einer benutzerfreundlichen Variante für den Kindle zu erstellen.Am meisten nervt, dass man keine Suche nach "exakter Reihenfolge der Wörter" auslösen kann. D.h. markiere ich z.B. drei nebeneinander stehende Wörter, weil ich ein Idiom vermute, wird nach Erklärungen gesucht, bei den alle diese drei Wörter vorkommen, egal in welcher Reihenfolge. So kann es passieren, dass ich 30 oder mehr Treffer habe. Das ist nicht sehr hilfreich.Abgesehen davon, dass dieses Dictionary als solches von Kindle nicht erkannt wird, und ich damit auch nicht die einfache "Dictionary Suchfunktion" in einem Lesetext auslösen kann.Fazit: als gedrucktes Buch vielleicht nicht schlecht, aber als Kindle- Version ungeeignet, wenn man in einem englischen Text Idioms erkennen möchte.

Fatto bene sarebbe stato utile un indice per argomento invece la ricerca si può fare solo in base alle parole.
