The SANDISK Micro Mate card reader was about $30+ cheaper than now?
UPDATE 7-7-2010 WHEN I originally wrote this review (my first I think this SD/HC card reader was about $7-15) And it is a super product NOT SURE why it costs way over $40 NOW 2010 --------- original review (was misplaced my Amazon to a Sandisk CARD not reader) The SANDISK Micro Mate card reader is the best money you will spend for a SD card reader that also accepts SDHC cards! It is "Pure and Simple"; to steal a album title from Joan Jett; No cords and it goes in one way into the USB port.(YES- some guys want an extention usb cable to make this easier to plug in to backsides of towers- I have one on my powermac as well) It is fast, reliable and durable. I like the tiny green LED indicator: it lets you know you have a positive conection and download is 'working' I can not recommend this highly enough. While my old friend, who repairs camcorders; comments to me about the "compression" on SD cards, I have been using them in 2 different types of cameras for 3+ years now and photography being my profession; I would say that they are a solid cards, also reliable and my images quite good.. BUT I DO NOT BUY THE CHEAPEST CARDS. I try to stick with SanDisk or other top manufactures. I personally question using a DSLR with SD cards.. I choose to buy a Nikon with CF cards with high write / read speeds, and a fire wire reader. My Update; Many DSLR are using SD cards now and MANY point and shoot and more advanced cameras are all going to SD or SDHC cards. I do not worry about "Compression" problems: i have been in several exhibitions where the camera was my small Canon that uses these SD cards. This card`reader is my favorite, but TARGUS does make a cheaper card that is equally useful and does come with the short extention usb cord: I got that at K-Mart in 2009 and keep it in my laptop case. these 2 Sandisk readers are with both my home computers- within reach

Failed after ONE use!
I downloaded some MP3 music onto a Transcend SDHC card through the XM-35U card reader on my computer. I purchased two of these readers so I could plug it into a USB port on the radios I have in my and and truck. Drove to Lowe's and Home Depot and it worked great. Went back to Lowe's this afternoon and plugged it back in and got a "Read Failure" message. When I plugged it into the USB port on my computer I get a 'Format Disk' message. The SDHC card is okay as it works in the other reader. Sandisk is usually good stuff, maybe this one is just a lemon. Now to see if Amazon will replace it.

As good as any, I suppose
The SanDisk MicroMate works well enough, for what it does, but its very large base requires that I unplug anything that might be plugged into the other two USB ports, since it takes up the space of all three of them. If it were narrower at the base, where it plugs into the USB port, this wouldn't be necessary. This is not an entirely trivial issue since it is annoying to have to unplug something else just because the card reader takes up the space of two USB slots. Although I still use this one sometimes, I have purchased another with a narrower base that I find to be far more convenient.

Saved my macbook
I own a mid-2010 Macbook Pro, and my SD card slot has recently failed to detect any of my SD cards. Before forking out the cash required to fix my mac's innards, I decided to give this reader a try. I was pleasantly surprised. This reader is quick, even when transferring 15+ GB of photos over from my Canon Rebel T3i. It is small and easy to pack around, and the dust cap keeps the USB insert clean when it is not in use. A great product that does exactly what it claims to do. One minor drawback comes to mind: the reader is wide enough that it blocks both USB ports on my mac (might not be a problem on later generations, I am not sure). This might be an issue for some people, but hasn't caused me any problems.

Nice Card Reader Just a Bit Too Big
This card reader is cheap, compact, and it works well. My only complaint about this is that if you own a 2008 generation Macbook you can only plug this in and no other USB devices. It's so wide it actually goes over top of the other USB port. I'm not sure about any other Macs but for my aluminum body this is true. I do like how compact it is and there is no cord involved although I did order the white IOGEAR SD card reader because the cord allows me to plug in and also plug my tv in to view pictures, videos, and such on my big screen.

Finally! A Properly Thought-Out Card Reader
Leave it to the people at SanDisk to come up with a memory-card reader that is this well designed. I love that the lid snaps (firmly!) on both ends -- even if you have an SD card in the reader! Seriously, how is it every card reader (and USB thumb drive for that matter) does not come with a cap that attaches to the body to keep the cap from getting lost? This seems like such a no brainer to me but this is one of very few memory-card readers I could find with this feature. The overall quality of this card reader is quite good (typical for SanDisk); cards slip in but don't feel loose and the cap not only snaps on and off both ends, but does so with a bit of "click" and authority. I bought two of these and both read and wrote to different cards without a hitch. They're slim on one the edge, but wide; so you might want to consider how this reader is going to be oriented when plugged into your device and whether or not the squarish design is going to block other ports. I have no such problems but others might. In short, loving this card reader.

Nimble but powerful
The Micro Mate feels fragile, and when it first is taken out of the packaging, it feels nimble. The fact that the card sticks out, and that the product is inexpensive contributes to this feeling. When it is actually put into a USB port, however, and a card is inserted, it works beautifully. The computer will instantly recognize it and will mount the SD card in it, similar to as if an internal card reader was installed, if not better over USB 2.0. Copy and write cycles are quick and fluid. With the LED indicator, which is sadly missing on some card readers, this one trumps over those in design and in usability.

Good product but...
This is an exceptional value- works great right out of the package (which is important because you don't get any instruction sheet). I bought it because my previous reader wouldn't handle the 2GB cards I bought (or SDHC cards, though I don't have any devices that accept these yet). Downside: it doesn't plug directly into the frontside USB ports because my Dell didn't leave enough flat space below the ports. A thoughtful redesign might have solved this. It does fit in the ports that come with the flat screen monitor I have but green "activity light" then faces the wrong way (tells you when the card is being accessed and you shouldn't remove the card). Also it would be nice to have an indicator showing which way to insert the card. Still, for this price it is a bargain.
