Good Tripod/Junk Sprinkler - Go Ahead and Order the Rain Bird Brass Replacment Head (you'll need it in a couple of months...)
UPDATE 7/12/16I am updating this review after approximately three months of use. I ordered this sprinkler in September 2015, so I only used initially for a month at the time of my original review. The sprinkler head finally stopped working in late June 2016, after less than two additional months of use. My original rating was 4 stars, but I have dropped to 3 Stars based on the short life span. Admittedly, my application is a bit tougher on sprinkler heads than typical users irrigating from a municipal water supply, so I don’t want to be overly harsh with my rating. Orbit now makes a similar tripod sprinkler with a brass head, which at the time of this review is exactly the same price on Amazon as the Zinc model. I would recommend trying the brass model instead of this zinc model, which should more accurately be described as Chinese pot metal. The Orbit adjustable tripod actually works great, so this purchase was not a complete burst. In fact, I highly recommend the following model found on Amazon as a replacement head to use on this tripod - “Rain Bird 25PJDAC Brass Impact Sprinkler, Adjustable 0° to 360° Pattern, 20' - 41' Spray Distance”. The Rain Bird replacement is the highest quality sprinkler I have found in a very long time (no Chinese pot metal here), and it handles dirty source water better than any impact head I have ever tried. Read further for specific details of the Orbit Zinc tripod Sprinkler.FUNCTION – 4.0 StarsThe Orbit Impact sprinkler worked fairly well (while it lasted), and the radius is pretty close to the stated specs. I use a well pump to draw irrigation water from a shallow lake behind my house, and I have purchased cheaper impact sprinklers before that would not work at all. This sprinkler cycles much faster than previous impact sprinklers I have used, which probably works better from an irrigation efficiency standpoint, but it makes walking past the sprinkler (while it is spraying the other direction) a difficult feat without getting wet. There is a screw that can be adjusted into the stream to create a coarser spray pattern and limit the spray radius. A small metal plate can be swiveled to limit spray radius as well, but it is much different than the typical top mounted adjustment designs of traditional impact sprinklers. The traditional design (that is adjusted by a knob on top of the head) is simpler to adjust than the side-mounted swivel plate on this model.Note – the adjustment stops on the Rainbird are much easier to adjust, and it is capable of true 360 degree operation (which the Orbit is not).TRIPOD – 4.5 STARSI have some steeper areas on my property, so I thought the Tripod might be useful for set up, but I found that it tips over fairly easily if I don't get it set up just right (on slopes). (I have no problems with it tipping when set up on flatter surfaces). This feature is handy for gardens and landscaping, though, and the legs adjust easily. I also found that the legs need to be extended at least somewhat, or the water hose kinks at the hose connection point. Ultimately, the tripod is the most redeeming feature of this model. I actually purchased another identical Orbit tripod (brass head), just because the tripod ultimately works so well with the (much higher quality) Rain Bird replacement head.DURABILITY – 2.0 STARSDurability is always an issue when using surface water instead of city or well, so I am not that surprised that the head lasted less than a growing season. I should have realized this from the start, because the material is cheap Chinese pot metal. The adjustment springs for the stops are a bit flimsy, and are a little persnickety as you need both hands free to hold the head and squeeze the spring to adjust the stops. It is also tough to adjust the stops during operation without getting a little wet. My old Ace Hardware impact sprinklers are much simpler in terms of just tapping the stops to make a small adjustment (instead of squeezing a spring). While similar in design, the Rain Bird replacement head stops are also much easier to adjust than the Orbit. In fact, everything on the Rain Bird model puts the Orbit to shame, all the way down to the washers on the fitting.THANKSThanks for reading my review.

Don't Buy
Don't buy. We use a dozen tripod sprinklers at our Texas horse farm. The horses will break one, once in awhile. Of course, home depot was out of stock. Amazon to the rescue. I bought 3 of this Orbit model. Don't buy this model. All three arrived with the deal breaker loose screws. There are 3 hinge pins where the legs meet the top of the unit, held in place by 6 screws. All 3 tripods had screws loose/falling out. It was fixable with disassembly and loctite, but you and I should have to be the QA dept for Orbit. Buy another brand.

Set it, and forget it !
One week in and all is working perfectly. Stand is sturdy, does not move (like noted on other posts). NO leaks. With multiple angles easy to do with each leg of the stand being adjustable with two "locks", enabling you two "arch" the water stream higher to throw it farther, or, use on a hill / incline to make level. Set mine on a timer at the faucet so all the work is done for me during the day in order to keep the new seed wet. Sprinkler head is replaceable so this should last long, long time.

Flips over when water is turned on.
I took a chance on this tripod sprinkler. All it does is topple over when the water is turned on. I tried adjusting the legs, the water pressure, placing a stone to weight it down. Nothing worked. Really disappointing. I’m sure the design flaw is how lightweight the legs are. They aren’t heavy enough to keep it standing. Maybe putting spikes in the feet would help anchor it into the soil. I can’t comment on the functionality of the sprinkler head itself. It would topple over before I had a chance to analyze it.

Warning: Will break after a couple of months
We purchased three of these sprinklers in late May, prior to reseeding our lawn. Two of the units were pressed into service for watering every two to three days since then.We are now in early August and 2 of the three sprinklers have big problems. For both of the problematic ones, the plastic female adapter that connects to the hose has come loose from the green metal neck that feeds water to the sprinkler head. The result is a high pressure spray that makes a mess of the area in immediate vicinity to the sprinkler, and depressurized the head.Given that both of the units that failed are the ones we have used (original plan didn't work so we just operated two and kept third in reserve), I am giving a one star rating. 100% failure rate on a product in three months is a no go.

Legs would adjust to the vibration
I just resturned this sprinkler to the UPS store! The sprinkler has good distance of the water spraying, the main issue was… The legs would not lock properly in place, they kept adjusting to the vibration of the sprinkler… Which in turn, made the sprinkler continue to fall!

I want to love it, but...
I've had two issues. I think they are separate, but 1.) The trigger that senses the water head to return in the other direction, stales. Essentially overwatering before one side before returning. 2.) The spring that sets the a left/right boundary is weak and pushes away. Preventing me from controlling the area I want to saturate.Sorry Orbit! Tell me my product is a quality defect and you want to make it right? I'm tired of getting drenched when trying to get it to work.

Great idea--tripods
Where have these sprinklers been all my life? Not actually the sprinkler, but the tripod. I've been using my gear driven sprinklers instead of the impulse sprinkler provided so far. I can water so much more efficiently and with less aggravation than using sprinklers on a spike!....(grubbing around on the ground, finally getting it right, then coming back later to find out the spike fell over once the ground got wet and you're spraying the side of your house.) Getting the sprinkler up on the tripod clears the bushes so they can be watered from above. Sometimes I prop one of the legs on 2 X 4's to get the spray even higher to where it's needed. Lots of flexibility.

Robust and secure
I chose this product because it had better reviews for the strength of the tripod than others sold on Amazon. I had bought one sprinkler in which the tripod was so badly made that I was amazed anyone would sell it at all - see my review. The Orbit tripod is a well made product and strong enough for the purpose intended, although stronger ones are available from trade suppliers. The female screw thread in the Orbit tripod is brass, which is much better than the plastic some other products use and doesn't leak. With the legs extended, it doesn't fall over as some reviewers claim. I can't speak for the sprinkler as I use a spinner instead. The spinner is from Darlac and works a treat.

Quite pleased
I am pleased with this sprinkler. Our water pressure is high, so it can blow it over if not set up carefully. It does cover a good area and I am happy with this, especially as the price was good.

Great Buy
Good product well made and versatile - very very happy. I had one with a spike - it lasted one week when the spike broke off in hard ground, because it was dry, that is why I was using the sprinkler Mr Production man !!!

Aluminum tripod sprinkler unstable
The sprinkler works quite well, however it is not made for larger watering surfaces as it falls over once you open valve, we are using a BRICK in the centre to keep in place - it a real pain in the $&@“ - whomever designed this product needs to go back to school & rethink this & retool to secure in place, the pins have fallen out assembling to the legs - pls assist me to replace this unit !!!!

Not worth the money
Seems cheaply made, can see the plastic getting brittle in the sun. Tips over all the time while in use.
