The last pencil you’ll need
While this is a premium product and an intimidating price tag for a mechanical pencil, this product is beautiful and meticulously designed. Pros The retractable tip helps prevent the tip from being bent and breaking, unlike all other pencils with this design. The grip is excellent and the weight distribution allows it to sit comfortably in the hand. This product is of a high quality and I have not experienced a mechanical failure for the three pencils I own in over 5 years. Neutral / preference This pencil is nearly entirely made of metal; as such, it is very heavy. Personally, this is a pro and makes it feel like a quality product. Cons You may as well assume that this thing doesn’t come with an eraser, just a lead stopper. If you get a ding on the pencil, the paint will be removed and exposed the raw metal beneath (eye sore for perfectionists). Due to the heavy weight, this pencil is difficult to write quickly with or do pencil tricks with.

Wow!.... Just Wow!
This is by far the best mechanical pencil I have ever bought (and I've bought a lot). I particularly like the design and how the lead sleeve can be retraced into the body of the pencil. It is a heavy beast, but to me that just screams quality. Is it worth the cost? For me, absolutely. Your mileage may vary :)

One Mech pencil to rule them all.
German engineering... Do I need to say anything else? As an engineer myself, I've always preferred mechanical pencils to take notes, sketch & "do math" on. Habit I developed since before university. My last mechanical pencil was a Blue Pentel 0.7mm that I first purchased before getting into Uni and used it throughout all my Uni study & exams. I unfortunately lost that pencil while moving homes and needed to purchase my next "companion" for the future and possibly the "last" one I'll ever purchase. I had heard about rOtring Mechanical pencils and decided to purchase one as a gift to myself & as the tool it is. I have no complains about this pencil, I do not have complaints about the retractable tip being "flimsy" at all.. I use this for taking notes and "doing math" and sometimes sketches. I absolutely love the way the pencil feels in my hand while I write. Build quality is great and the pencil feels like a proper writing tool and not like a toy as some of these other mechanical pencils. It is a sturdy, well designed tool. The only "complain" I have, which I have will all pens/ mechanical pencils is due to the fact I have large hands, the "clip" is something I remove from all my pens/ mech pencils if they get in the way of my grip/ where the "clip" typically would rest on the hand. But that isn't something specific about this product as I do it to all my handwriting utensils. Hopefully I have purchased the last mechanical pencil I'll ever use and I have no regrets.

rOring 800 is Awesome!
The rOring 800 is awesome. The negative reviews that say there is some tip wobble are way over blown on this aspect. There is a very little bit of wobble as there has to be in a moving part. This is consistent as I have several of these for my work. They all have the same amount of tip wobble. Those reviewers who have such an issue with this aspect never actually discuss how the pencil performs tip wobble or not. In practice the minuscule tip wobble is simply not an issue. It is an outstanding pencil. I am an artist and use it all the time as well as the rOtring 600 and Graphgear 1000. These all have their strengths and purpose as do other pencils...even the wooden ones. The 800 is a wonderful tool and built extremely well and the retractable tip works as it should and makes this a travel friendly alternative to the 600. And ...it is a pencil folks...write with it, draw with it, enjoy it.

Nice but…
I bought this pencil to round out my ROtring collection… the Rapid Pro, Newton, 600, and now the 800. Of pencils, I prefer the Rapid Pro for EDC. The 800 has a retractable tip, but it’s almost 1/2” long. The thicker base is about 1/4” and the part that hold the lead is 1/4”. And the twist then click motion to begin writing is excessive. The 600’s tip doesn’t retract so it can easily be damaged if dropped or mishandled. I have what I believe is a Newton pencil… it only says ROTRING on the barrel and has a smooth, not checkered grip. This also has a retracting tip, but I prefer the checkered grip.

Take over RR600
Hands down the best mechanical pencil I have ever owned and it made me quite a nerd. Honestly a great gift for people in music, art, or related field where even if using a pencil is nostalgic, this would just show them the love. Maybe I’m just weird like that!

Broke after a month.
I have owned a variety of mechanical pencils, ranging from cheap to expensive brands, and most have lasted me 18+ years. I decided to give this brand a try after it was highly recommended, but unfortunately, it stopped working after only a month. The twisting mechanism at the top does not function properly, and the tip does not stay steady enough for me to write a single letter. I am baffled and don’t even know how this could have happened. Truthfully, a $0.99 mechanical pencil is more reliable and lasts longer than this supposedly well-known product. It has been an absolute waste of time and money. I even tried to fix it without success. The bottom line is that I will never purchase anything from this brand again. I had high hopes and was enthusiastic about the product, but unfortunately, it has been nothing but a disappointment and an absolute waste of money. Thank you.

I often find myself with a mechanical pencil in my pocket and with the retractable tip you get a great mechanical pencil to write with and the tip won't get damaged or make holes in your pockets. Love this. I leave my 600 and rapid Pro at my desk and take the 800 with me in my pocket.

No doubt if you are looking into a 45 quid pencil you'll be doing your research. And some of that will lead you to a lot of people saying that the retractable Rotring has a slight tip wobble (because it's moving parts). I've been using this daily for over a year now and it's still going strong. I'm a massive fidgetter so I'm constantly popping the nib in and out and taking the rubber protector on and off and it's still not gotten to a point where it's worn or damaged. This is my favourite pencil. It weighs a really nice amount for me and feels like a good bit of kit. The improvements I think it could do with are minor. The first is the little tab thing that you slide it onto shirt pockets and what not. I think this should not be painted. This area is the one that gets the most wear and naturally the paint chips. It'd made more sense to plain finish it. The second is the availability of the rubbers. The rubbers last ages but they are a little difficult to pickup, in the end I opted to go for the ones direct from their site because they are a special size and didn't want to get the wrong ones. Besides that though I really like the pencil. I'd definitely recommend it if you are looking to upgrade to a something proper.

Excellent build (premium quality!!!). Got a black one, love the color scheme (with Gold tip). Retractable tip feature is very helpful (if you have the habit of dropping things!) Very happy that I bought it!!!!
