Behlen Guitar Toners are used to add controllable, even color to your guitar. Made from fade resistant dyes, they apply transparent color so the beauty of the wood shows through, yet they are strong enough that a few coats will create pleasing, even color. Encore Brown is used to create a sunburst or starburst effect, or to tone the sides of an acoustic guitar darker. Often it is used at the edge, while Starcast Amber (#44984, sold separately) is sprayed over the Encore Brown, but in a wider pattern, to create a two-toned starburst. Typically, Vinyl Sealer (#48345, sold separately) is applied before the toners, and Stringed Instrument Lacquer (#48954, sold separately) is applied after the toners to create a professional finish. Also available from Rockler, the Behlen Sunburst Guitar Finish Kit.

Buy Krylon if you want your axe to look like a 10 yr old finished it
One word--Sweet! -- This did exactly what I was expecting. I bought a Harley Benton LP kit to try my hand at a Tobacco Burst. This along with the Starcast Amber mixed perfectly. The entire body, neck, and head stock were done with several coats of Amber, followed with the Encore Brown along the edges. Made a nice tear drop that looked like it came out of the Gibson paint booth. The two blend well together with a nice gradual transition from Amber to Brown. The Brown will get dark through several coats but that gave me the tobacco color I was after. It was all finished with several coats of Behlen lacquer and hours of wet sanding, buffing and polishing. One can should be sufficient for a guitar and possibly another smaller project. Ironically, a month after the HB Les Paul project was finished, I did a relic job on it and looks even better. If you want a professional looking finish, get this. If you want your axe to look like it was painted by a 10 yr old, get Krylon.

I've used this for several guitar projects and it always turns out nicely. I warm the lacquer by setting the can in hot water for about 10 minutes before using it. It always flows out smoothly. The picture shows results for a sunburst. From right to left it's bare maple, sanding sealer, Star Amber, Encore Brown.

Great for sunburst on cornhole boards
The guitar toner worked great around the outside of my sunburst pattern. I used it to make a pair of cornhole boards. One can per board. Only trouble I had was it lifting when applying the clear top coat. Go slow and light and you won't have that problem. Lesson learned

Nozzle won't stay on
The toner was good quality, I just wish the made a better can for it, I could not keep the spray nozzle attached to the can and after a while the can started to leak all over and made a big mess
