A significant step towards a deeper understanding of the reign of Thutmose III
After publishing a comprehensive synthesis of Amenhotep III's reign ("Amenhotep III: Perspectives on His Reign"), Professors Eric H. Cline and David O'Connor presents their new release, an outstanding and up to day collection of essays about one of Egypt's best known Pharaohs: Thutmose III. It was the editors attempt to present the first "...extensive monographic treatment in English..." of this great ruler of ancient Egypt. Before a couple of words about the volume in case, I have to emphasize: they fully succeeded to provide not only the English speaking scholars, but also the whole community of Egyptologists with a model monograph about Thutmose III. Cline and O'Connor has brought together some of the current leading Egyptologists to produce a single volume. This work introduces the reader to the following topics: a brief review of the reign of the "enigmatic" Thutmose III; his coregency with Hatshepsut; administration (one of the best developed studies of the book!); religion and cult; building activities; problems concerning with the art of the epoch; the warrior ruler; foreigners in Egypt, and the accession of Amenhotep II. The book is a remarkably good value for its information content. In general, the contributors present the state of our knowledge accurately and in due proportion, while focusing their efforts on producing comprehensive, insightful and lucid studies on topics important to anyone who wishes to conceive the realities of life in ancient Egypt during the reign of Thutmose III. For those who wish to investigate the debated subjects further, the editors provide a full bibliography. "Thutmose III. A New Bibliography" is sure to be a standard work in the field for many years to come.
